The basics
What is Shajara?
An app for building your family tree, keeping it, and sharing it with your relatives. Names and relationships are added generation by generation, so what the family knows lives in one place instead of scattering between memory and paper.
Who can add people?
The owner and admins can add anyone in the tree. A contributor adds and edits only their close circle: themselves, their parents, their siblings by the same father, their wives, and their children. A viewer can look but not change anything.
Why is the Arabic name required?
Arabic is the record’s original. The Arabic name stays correct however the Latin spelling is written. The English version is written automatically when a person is added, and an admin can correct it at any time.
Joining & roles
How do I join my family’s tree?
By invitation only. The owner, an admin or a relative who contributes to the tree sends an invitation to your phone number or email, or a link; accepting it ties you to your place in the tree. There are no access requests in the app, so nobody can ask their way into a family tree whose family does not know them.
What are the four roles?
Owner: owns the tree, and alone can change its visibility, transfer it, or delete it. Admin: adds, edits, and invites. Contributor: edits their close circle. Viewer: looks only.
What does “my place in the tree” mean?
Your account is one thing; your card in the tree is another. The invitation ties the two together: it points at the card that represents you, so the tree knows where you stand and works out your relationships from there.
Privacy
Who can see my tree?
That depends on the tree’s visibility, which only the owner sets: “private” is members only, “link” lets anyone with the link read it, “public” lists it in Discover to read. Nobody edits anything except members, according to their role.
Who can see my phone number?
You choose, under Privacy → Phone visibility. The default is “admins and me”, and you can widen it to the tree’s members or narrow it to yourself alone. The number never reaches non-members either way.
Can strangers search for my name?
No. Search in Discover runs over family, branch, and tribe names, never over people’s names.
Your account
What is the difference between free and premium?
Premium is per tree, and the tree’s owner buys it. It unlocks extras for that tree such as deeper insights, the tree poster, and the heritage themes. Building and sharing the tree itself needs no subscription.
How do I change my phone number?
Your phone number is your sign-in identity, and it cannot be changed inside the app yet. If your number is changing, contact us before you lose access to the old one.
How do I delete my account?
Under Support → Delete account. If you own a tree, transfer or delete it first, so no family tree is left without an owner. The family data you added stays in the tree, no longer attributed to you.
